Mark David Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon, was carrying a copy of The Catcher in the Rye when he did it. Reminiscent of the way that Holden frequently calls the people he encounters in the novel ’phonies’, Chapman claimed that he shot Lennon in order to save the masses from his ‘inauthenticity’.
That was in one of my lecture notes. Not quite so elaborately written, but it was there. And it has thus far come in handy a grand total of zero times.
